The Iowa Writers` Workshop (Paperback)

The Iowa Writers` Workshop (Paperback)

By the mid-1970s, it was expected that America`s young would-be writers–the best of the best–would gather at the center of North America to undergo a common initiation and, they hoped, anointment: the Iowa Writers` Workshop. The competition for admission was stiff, and the workshop had a reputation of being a cutthroat ?writers` boot camp? with a high washout rate. But still they came. By the time they left two years later, dreams would have been dashed and illusions shattered, but careers would have also been jump-started, egos and talents fire-hardened. Among the talents that emerged in those years–writing, passionately jousting, criticizing, drinking, and debating in the classrooms and barrooms of Iowa City–were the young versions of writers who became Jane Smiley, T.C. Boyle, Allan Gurganus, Sandra Cisneros, Rita Dove, William Kinsella, Jayne Ann Phillips, Jorie Graham, Jim Galvin, Lee Blessing, Mark Jarman, and Joy Harjo. Iowa Writer`s Workshop is a blend of interviews, commentary, advice, gossip, anecdotes, analyses, history, and asides with the authors` classmates and teachers at the Iowa Writers` Workshop. It`s a look at the history of a literary institution and at the methods that have made the workshop so respected and successful.
